Grumple vrs VCR

so I am kinda going through a shitty time right now and i commemorating that with a series of drawings of my favourite character i have ever come up with. The Grumple. truth is there wasn't much to come up with. those who know of it will understand what i mean by that. so this one was from a post i saw this morning. it a great line and i think it is from Elf. "I’m sorry I ruined your lives and crammed 11 cookies into the VCR."

MOI

Some Sketch book stuff c:

A Storm of Swords

What we got here is a cover design that I did for Mr Georg R.R Martins third book in his series a song of Ice and fire. I chose to try and depict Robb Stark as a tragic hero were the struggle for power can kill the weak but it can also kill the very strong. He won all the battles but lost the war. A man who ralied all of the northern men under one banner. The king in the north slayed for having the fickle heart of a teenager. so now some formal qualities the intent was to make a piece that was visceral but not gory gore allways cheepens a piece. no matter how cool it is gore will always make it look silly. Except for one piece of art whose aggresive intent has lasted through the ages The_Raft_of_the_Medusa but that is another post. The wolf head is inverted as a reference to the image of the hanged man or the martyr The_Hanged_Man in this way Robb becomes less of a warmonger and more of a sacrificial lamb, even with all his power and military force backing him. The nights are a reference to power by numbers. but even with all the might of the north backing him he was still snuffed out in the glory years of his life. The font is tall to accentuate the tall long composition. The font is a strong dark sans-serif this also helps to keep the Idea of  a strong visceral poster. In the end I made the poster so that it would work both as a poster and as a book cover adding some much needed maturity to the books covers that are currently in circulation.

A Song of ice and Fire.

I am not a big lover of fan art but i decided to draw some of my favourite characters from a song of fire and ice. first is The Lord Commander of the wall. an implacable bear of a man who selflessly gave up his ruling seat on bear island to protect the realm from grumplings snarks and squisher. The second is Price Obryn Martell Prince of Dorn. Another selfless ruler of Westeros. Prince Obryn lost his sister and nieces and nephews to the terror Sir Gregor Clegane he tosses away years of planing and strategy to over throw both house Baratheon and house Lannister for one opportunity to avenge the death of his beloved sister. Some may say that Obryn is a man of little honour because he uses poison in his battle. I have great respect for a man who will force an enemy to relive the pain that he has caused others through the use of slow acting venoms. Lastly honoured hand of the king Tyrion Lannister. the bottom line is if he doesn't get to ride a dragon in the last book the series will have been for naught. Tyrion is just.... well what can i say he's BALLIN AS ALL HELL. The man is the only real Lannister that Tywin Lannister ever conceived he is quick and cunning with a bold sense of humour and more luck then Han Solo and Jack Sparrow put together. An amazingly deep character. and probably the only reason I made it through the last book. his adventures are enormously more interesting than what is usually going on in the books.

Igil up date number 2

Chek it out! almost ready for her strings.
The photos are pretty shity I'm no great photographer but there are some cool new things to look at.
This is the bowl all hollowed out its alot deeper than the plans called for but with all these knots and stuff you can see why I tried to keep as much of it as possible.
This is a profile of the crow I think it looks good. I really do wish that I had better wood to work with. the poplar i found turned out to be really soft and pitted.
Well thats the update next il be throwing some music parts on it to see if it works. If it works I will probably build a whole new one from a nice carving hard wood.

Igil up date

A little up date on my on going Igil project. I figured it was a good time to up date since some nasty stuff happened when i was working  on it (but i will save that until the end). Well the project has come a long way since the last post. I have started scooping out the bowl it is way deeper than the plans said it should be but I'm hoping that it will just give it a deeper louder sound. I guess that shows what I know about instrument. :) so far i am still sticking to hand tools except for the drill but thats because i have never seen a hand drill except for in a museum.

these are some close ups of the carvings on the top. I think its turning out.

this is the sound board drilled out. this also were my mega mistake happened.

As i was drilling out the big hole i took a big chunk out of the back. It was probably a combination of a dull drill bit and pushing to hard. but there is nothing we can do about it now. I have started to do some roughs and figure out what I can do to fix this lil mistake.

Igil, Never do any thing the easy way

Well fellas and gals I have had a little side project that I would like to share with you. Its not a drawing but more a functional sculpture. Its called an Igil. "An igil (Tuvan- игил) is a two-stringed Tuvan musical instrument, played by bowing the strings. (It is called "ikili" in Western Mongolia.) The neck and lute-shaped sound box are usually made of a solid piece of pine or larch. The top of the sound box may be covered with skin or a thin wooden plate. The strings, and those of the bow, are traditionally made of hair from a horse's tail (strung parallel), but may also be made of nylon. Like the morin khuur of Mongolia, the igil typically features a carved horse's head at the top of the neck above the tuning pegs, and both instruments are known as thehorsehead fiddle." or so wikipedia says. I sort of stumbled across it when i was looking at some other videos and found this one iv always been completely in love with the mongolian people and their culture. After hearing the enchanting and hypnotizing melody of this elegant instrument i knew I needed to have one of my own. I did my research and found a very helpful and talented Kyle Abbott. here is his video  kyle was instrumental (pun intended) in helping me start this project. The first step in the project was to go out and find the raw materials. We have no shortage of wood here in Okotoks we just had a flood and there were more than enough seasoned longs washed up. also i work for the town so i spent most of the week I started the project looking for a log the ideal shape, size and seasoned too.  Paul (my brother) and I headed out in the rain to find the medium for the project. we found two long both poplar. one was about 14 or 16 incest wide and about 5 feet long. the other a little smaller (this is the one paul found). The big long must have weighed around 450 lbs (no joke when we got home we weighed it) we carried it a long way to the truck and our shoulders were sore for the next two days. but what is art with out a little pain. the second long was also carried out of the woods but wasn't nearly as ridicules a trek. (thanks Paul) The next day I spend my hours after work trying to split the big log only to find that the interior was waterlogged and rotted away. The log was completely unusable. after a whole afternoon I switched to the other log. I started the carving like i would any painting working from my largest tool to the smallest. first i hacked away at it with my axe then with my hatchet. I chose to do the whole project with hand tools. no easy task but so much more rewarding than any chain saw or bandsaw could give you. It also gives me the privilege to get to know the wood, its perfections in its imperfections. With out further a due some pictures of what I have done over the last 3 weeks.
this is the big log. rotted through and through
this is the small log. with its first days trim.
starting to look like some thing.
Profile. this is the point I am at now.
Traditionally the head of the Igil is topped with a horses head. now don't get me wrong I have spent more than my fare share of time with horses and I have no special love for them. I always thought of the Igil as a story tellers instrument. and to me the Raven is the story tellers animal. so that is what will be topping my Igil. plus even if it doesn't make music it will  be a beautiful piece for the corner of any room.
After four years I am a big sucker for roughs so these are a few for this project.

Blinky™ from Ruairi Robinson on Vimeo.

Work from March

So most of my March was spent working on my portfolio and my website and the pulp fiction novel so here is the pulps I did.

The concept was pretty straight forward. I read some weird stuff about Nazis and the occult and one seamlessly lead to the other. that plus my love of radio stories and real pulp sci-fi made this project really easy to get in to. So me and my buddies in the program had a great time joking and playing around with these crazy ideas. That aside I like to think that I am slowly becoming more comfortable with painting.

Another kool Animation

Another animation to add to the list.

Website update

I got some new kool stuff for ma website. A border and a sweet back button

Alternative houses

http://mekaworld.com/

These houses are the next big thing. Built out of shipping containers. They are a great alternative to the standard cheap buildings that we are surrounded with. I'm definitely going to get one.
